My Elixir

A song in the silent woods
A drop of the morning dew
A baby in the arms of a mother
A leaf that the wind blew
Take everything but these away
Let my elixir of life stay

A word with the one I love
A change of heart I brought
A fruit from the seed I sowed
A line from the poetry I wrote
Take everything but these away
Let my elixir of life stay

A balloon in the hand of a child
A hope in the rising sun
A smile that I can bring to a face
A tear of joy in the eyes of someone
Take everything but these away
Let my elixir of life stay

Happiness is a state of mind
Not found, nor stored
A thought so powerful
Not pursued, nor borrowed
It keeps finding me
When I choose to let it be
You can take everything but this away
My elixir of life will stay

On my trip to Bangalore, I had gone out on a walk with my maternal grandfather, or Nana, as I lovingly call him. Most of the time he was feeling his way along the road. Feeling because he couldn't see. He developed Glaucoma a few years ago after a stroke and ever since his vision has kept degrading reaching a figure of 25% of normal this year. He was also not able to recognize the sound of approaching vehicles since he couldn't hear their engines rattle. He is deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other. Why is it called an Interview?

I am jubilant. I have stayed away from the newspaper for a week. The feeling of nausea due to overconsumption of information has finally ceased. I have even stayed away from the many news channels that crowd the first 50 channels of my television box. So what if the world is slipping deeper into recession and India is anticipating two events (IPL and the Elections) which will see expenditure of 0.6% of our GDP in just over a month? Not much can change within a week. At least nothing that has any influence on me. Why the sudden aversion from current affairs one may ask. I was preparing for a b-school interview. The array of questions that they can ask you is insane. And as a result, even if you consider yourself to be generally well-read, you are never as ‘aware’ as your interviewers are of the world around you, at least you don’t interpret things they way they do. What I wish Dadi dreams about on her deathbed

When people are 300 seconds away from their death, research shows that there is a surge in electrical activity in the brain. Neurons are communicating rapidly with each other. Multiple parts of the brain light up in a manner the person was very much alive and dreaming. We don't know what these dreams are, but based on the experiences of people with near-death experiences,  we know they are likely to lucidly see the experiences that have shaped their being. My dadi is critically ill due to a fall and in the Intensive Care Unit. As a family, we are clear we don't want to extend her suffering. On receiving the news, my partner shared this reflection on death with me. I thought it would be good to send her a last wish, in the form of dreams I would like her to dream about, as she breathes her last breath.
