Random groups we join on Facebook

My friend joined nearly 50 groups in a span of one day. I have been joining random groups on Facebook too but 50 in a day seemed to be like a landmark figure. Some of the names of the group are interesting, amusing and have an instant connection with what's on my mind, which seems to be the sole reason of joining the groups. Here's a list of some of those which my close friends and/or I have joined (keeping the names as they originally are, so please excuse the language, grammar, et al) in no specific order: 1)I Can Type On My Mobile Without Looking At The Keypad. 2)Sometimes ALL you need is your best friend. 3)Drawing with your finger on fogged glass. 4)FLINCHING IN BED COZ YOU HAD A DREAM YOU WERE FALLING... 5)'I don't bloody care how old the song is! I like it. So shut up!' 6)I'm double majoring in Napping and Facebook with a minor in Procrastination. 7)No I'm not lying, but when you look at me like that, how can I not smile? 8)I Have Died Over 147 Times ...

Long Time No See

Me: How come you are up at this hour? Myself: I am always up at this hour. Me: Did you know you don't wake up in time for the 8.30 lectures? Myself: Of course I do. I have a dream within a dream within a dream....just like nested loops in programming. Every time the alarm rings, I wake up in a dream. I exit one dream and return to the parent dream. Me: Crap! You are sleep talking. Myself: I am sleep talking half the time. I am sleeping from 2 AM to 2 PM. Surprised you didn't know. Me: Don't forget, I am the insomniac that you once used to be. Myself: I thought I was too, till the winter came knocking on my doors. Time froze. I froze in time, apparently. Me: Faff. When will you ever learn how to talk straight? Myself: It's proven. That's why food is preserved in freezers. The microbes' metabolism slows down in the near zero degree temperature range and hence they cannot carry on with their work of spoiling the food. So you see it's humane for your body clock ...

In My Blue Pyjamas

I don't know why I am writing this on my blog. It was 10:15 AM. I was in such deep sleep that only a canon shot could have awakened me. Or so I thought, until I was awakened by the ringtone of my cell-phone. I cursed the caller. Someone would have to be cruel to awaken a harmless soul from his sweet slumber. I heard a familiar voice. Once my brain had finished its daily booting routine, I managed to identify the owner of the voice. It was MS, my classmate and friend. I don't remember which language he spoke in but what he said vaguely translated to "Are you not coming for the lecture?" I told him that I was. I reiterated that the lecture was only at 10:15. That's when he broke the news to me "It's already 10:15." I went like "Oh F***, not again." Had it been any other phase of my education, I would have bunked with pleasure. My philosophy used to be "Why put in an effort in waking up for a boring lecture which again puts you to sle...

System Reset

It happened one week ago. My friend and I were in the middle of a badminton game, playing on the deserted road by our neighbourhood garden. The road is rarely used by vehicular traffic and it being an odd hour of a lazy Sunday afternoon, the chance of a vehicle coming by was even less.  It was my serve. My opponent flicked the shuttle cock in my direction and it fell right behind me. I took an about-turn .... and  then found myself lying on the floor, looking in random directions, sometimes through people and trying to comprehend what was going on. It was literally the "main kahaan hoon" situation which a lot of protagonists from the Hindi movies of the 1970s found themselves in. I was totally blank. I was having a system reset. It felt like eternity. I felt I had been sleeping forever, sleeping for so long that my memory had cobwebs and dust strewn all over it. I couldn't remember any details. Slowly as I became more conscious, they all start coming back, limping into my...

Let us make it a drive, to remember...

My new office location, to put it in one word, is far, so far that we have given christened it ''Kalapani", which was a colonial era prison on the Andaman and Nicobar islands. The fastest we reach there through any combination of means of transport (one is not enough) is 1 hours and 15 minutes, but then we live in a world where traffic could get stuck under a flyover long enough for you to complete your grocery purchases and return to your car without the need to park even park it. Sometimes, I wonder if a passerby would look at it as a road, or a parking lot! Since we are sincere employees and we love our work, we put up with all the hurdles that the travelling poses in our path and tirelessly keep looking for new alternatives to reach our final destination. Today, we tried a car, no actually a jeep, Maddy's jeep. And if you think we only drove to work, think again. I bet you could not have made your first drive to work so memorable as this. Pro-noun-sia-sen

Everyone has a unique way of talking. I love observing how individuals from different parts of the country speak and the verbal etiquette they follow. Recently, in a lecture, while making notes, I was also meticulously paying attention to the facilitator's style of speaking and noting the anomalies down. By the end of it, I had quite an elaborate list of mispronounced words, which some of you might even laugh on if you are fastidious about the spoken word. I am writing a part of it down here, the objective being to see if any of you can correctly guess which part of the country this person was from. hierarchical: high- rar -chick- al quotation: ko - tay -sun section: sex-sun information: in-for-may-suns fatal: phat- tal inflation: in- flaa -sun users: u-sh- ers able: abb - le (like apple) foxpro : fox-fro concentration: cun - sunn - tra -sun null: know-all balance: baa- lansh -e people: pee-pols Hemant : hee - maan -t view: byu - hh segregate : sigrig -gate study: sturr - dy in...

Stalk Talk

What do you do if a stalker who had lost your trail comes back into your life? What do you do if he knows where you stay exactly and has just dropped a gift at your doorstep on your birthday? Well, something of this sort happened to my PAL. I will call her PAL itself for ease of reference throughout the rest of this blog. It was her 20th birthday. As is usually the case with people celebrating their birthdays, she too received a number of birthday greetings. On one of this calls, she heard an unrecognizable voice and that's when her ordeal began. Caller: Wish you many many happy returns of the day! May you have all the happiness, joy and success you have ever wanted. PAL: Thank you. May I know who this is? C: May you get everything you desire. P: Ok, thanks a lot but stop. Please introduce yourself. C: Isn't it enuf to know that the feelings are heart felt? P ( getting a little irritated): I think the feelings will mean a lot more if I know who the person is. C: If I tell y...

Relations Management

This has absolutely no relation with my article in Education Times dated 17th January. As always, it is another random post on the who's who and what's what of my so-far insignificant life. This time I look at standard dialogues of the apparent members of my extended family. First and foremost is the introductory dialogue. "Pehchante ho?" Since it is not good to be asocial, I try to blink, smile, then blink again, feigning the 'I am pushing my memory hard to conjure some name' look. On a memory miss, I say a polite and soft " No". Knowing the consequences of the reply, I force myself into a trance to skip the huge chain of relations that emerges out of the conversation, more so, if the reply is in English. "I am your father's maternal uncle's wife's sister-in-law." It would have been way better on my behalf to add an " and I am not interested in knowing you" tag after the first "No" but being curt is not a...

Steely Resolve

Promises are meant to be broken and resolutions even more so. I barely know of a few people who genuinely stick to them. For most others, it is fashionable to make resolutions and then claim "I am going to try to stick to it, thought I don't think I will be able to do so beyond a month." I was partly successful in some of them. ‘Them’ included resolutions like not having tea for a year! With the slightly more difficult ones, failure was inevitable. However, I soon stopped committing myself to them at the start of the year and have now completely moved towards a goal-oriented approach. But if I were ever to make a resolution again, these are the ones which will test my patience and determination to the limit(listed in random order). I Net - Centric I will stay online for a maximum of one hour in a day. I will orkut only once in a week. I will not torture readers with highly opinionated political blogs. I will not rush into writing testimonials. II Behavioural I will not ...

What your pick up line shouldn't be?

We all love our social networking sites. Why won't we? They are a great place to catch up with new friends and find long lost ones too. But on the flipside, there's this whole menace of despo's scrapping. Being a guy, I don't bear the brunt of those scraps, but I have seen a lot of those in the scrap books of some of my female friends. Here're are some (marked in bold) I found from one of the communities against desperados for everyone to have a good laugh. I have supplemented them with replies of my own. u are so beautiful.....it must have hurt falling down from heaven! Yeah, pity I'll have to go back up there after reading this.I don't have any plans of falling down again. You look so soothing . Do you really soothe others ? Man, where did you see that side of me? Genius. I thought only my husband has experienced that bit. U n I have the same b'day. Ummm Lets find out what more we have in common than our horoscopes. Hmmm. Yeah despo scraps. U write the...

Caught in the Cold

Image
Ailments are many, but none trouble you as much as the simplest of all, yet the one with the potential to cause the maximum disruption in your routine – cold. There were many things happening around me last week, which I felt I should write about, but my incessant cold has beset me to such an extent that it demands the priority. I have had two kinds of problems with this intriguing common cold virus. First of them is the sneezing fit, which I attribute more to my hyper-allergic nature than the virus itself. Staying in an environment which Mumbai offers only makes things worse. Second is of course, the issue of a blocked nose. You feel choked, heavy under and above the eyes, and are often left gaping for reasons not worth it. Worst of all, there are no medicines which guarantee a cure for cold, except time. As the adage goes, “If you take medicine, your cold will cure in a week, if you don’t it will take 7 days.” Now I have no intentions to explain what Wikipedia can about common cold. ...
